The story of the Tieszen family and healthcare begins on a ship in the Atlantic Ocean in 1874. Derk Tieszen Sr., was a middle-aged German man, who, with his family was immigrating from Russia to the United States. A young girl among the immigrant group had dislocated her elbow while playing on the ship. There were no doctors aboard, but Derk was able to set the elbow. We know Derk had some prior experience with bone setting, having observed Dr. Wiebe, a Knockenartz (bone setter), in Russia. This event is the first bone setting by Derk we have record of.
After the ship docked in New York, Derk, his family and a group of immigrants took a train to the Dakota Territory. A homestead was chosen about 50 miles north of Yankton, near what is now the town of Marion, SD. Derk Tieszen and his family began farming the next summer. A fellow settler dislocated his shoulder and asked Derk to help. Word spread and Derk soon had other patients. In 1879, the railroad came, increasing Derk's clientele to the point that he quit farming and dedicated himself to bone setting full time, at the family homestead.
Eventually Derk was joined in practice by his son, Peter D. Peter carried on his father's tradition of bone setting and passed it on to his children. Three of Peter's sons; Isaac, Henry and Joseph would become third generation bone setters. It was in the second and third generations of the Tieszen healthcare tradition that Licensing of Chiropractors began.
In 1927, Dr. Isaac built The Tieszen Clinic and Chiropractic Hospital in Marion, S.D. The fourth generation and fifth generations have continued to practice in this facility, and do so to this day.
